It is coming time to do a drain and refill on my truck's transmission. Something I've wondered about recently is can I swap the fluid pan on the E4OD with one from a 4R100? I want to get one with a built in drain plug to make the drain a little less messy.

Just make sure to use the reusable rubber gasket designed for the 4R100 pan. The cork will work, but why risk leaks from over-tightening?
It is especially important to note that the rubber gasket absolutely CANNOT be used on the E4OD pan though....the older pan has bosses around the holes designed to not over-squish the cork gasket that keep the anti-crush spacers on the rubber gasket from allowing ANY squish on the rubber gasket. It will leak like crazy.

Well the E4OD COULD have the elastomeric gasket but that was a 96 model year mid production change I think. Same with the filters from factory having little feet which keep the filter from popping out unduly lol
And 4x4 and 4x2 pans are different, 4x4 pan can be used on 4x2 but it hangs lower I think
Also the bolts for a pan which uses the new gasket are longer I believe to engage threads(since the gasket is thicker?) this is an e4OD 4x2 pan which uses the cork gasket, the one which has the ridges for the reusable gasket has text on the square flat area of the pan saying something to the effect of the gasket is a reusable kind Idk much about 4r100 but I believe the pans are the same..? as the late e4Od pans but just have the drain bolt provision
So far it's looking like the pan bolt patterns are basically the same.. Did some more digging on other forum posts and it seems generally accepted that you need that reusable gasket with the 4R100 pan. I'll call some parts guys at the local Ford dealers, see what they know and if they can get some part numbers.

it should be the same seal yes. the pan is the same shape/pattern. the 4r100 is an e4OD with updates , they look almost the same on outside.
