Modernize the engine or keep it original
In a discussion about an air filter I saw different opinions.
I have a 1985 F Ford 250 with a 460 engine.
My truck was still in California last year and I think it is still completely original.
I would like to know what FTE members: advise….
Modernize as much as possible or keep it original?
Modern:
carburetor, air filter, ignition and so on.
Now and then I drive on dirt roads but I also just like to tour with it.
The most important thing for me is that my Ford always works and continues to do.
I'm curious about your reactions.
Sincerely,
Johan

I think the carb is the only update I would do when yours has issues. The Summit Racing carb has been shown to be one of the better aftermarket updates.
I like to keep things simple.
This truck came from Bakersfield California and is now located in Ravenswoud.
Because this Truck is already 37 years old, I pay little tax, namely € 120 per year.If this was a new car I would pay $120 every month!First of all, I gave the Truck a rust-resistant treatment, replaced the door seals, painted the roof and hood.
Then the interior and of course the audio adjusted.
Now it is the turn of the engine where necessary. I repaired the rubbers of the steering axle yesterday.
I am happy with your advice.I will try not to be fooled with all kinds of improvements that can be seen on YouTube. In the end it's all about having fun
Thanks againJohan
The Summit carbs are great, I've used them several times on different vehicles. Easy install, little-to-no adjustment needed, and work like they should. They add a bit of shine under the hood too... at least for a little while.
I wouldn't/don't hesitate to update my old vehicles. Carbs, intakes, HEI ignition, upholstery materials, electronics, stuff like that. For me, the line is drawn at wheel design/size, exterior lighting, gauge/tach design, radio, and exterior geegaws like mirrors, grill, and sometimes paint color... l just dig the vintage vibe, especially with a truck.
Not knowing the market in the Netherlands, l don't know whether or not you'd hurt any value by updating it... I can't afford the kinds of vehicles that lose value with modifications. In the US our trucks don't have much value above being a cool and interesting way to get some work done... it'll be a looong time before we see one at Pebble Beach... unless it belongs to the landscaper.
That's a good looking truck you got there, looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Your canopy, shell, topper, whatever you call it, Johan, the aluminum thing on your bed is a PERFECT example of what l meant by exterior "vintage vibe". That thing, nice as it is, is exactly what you would have seen on that truck in 1985. A fancier, streamlined fiberglass unit would have just looked... odd

Dus voorlopig klussen genoeg

Maybe some necessary improvements. the engine itself runs quite well.
Of the double fuel tank, only the main tank works.
So enough chores for now
(I don't think I'm using the answering system properly yet) Sorry

He recently looked at a 460 in a motorhome and made some elegant changes that improved power and mileage. I hope you can find that youtube as it is pretty simple and straightforward.

I did install the Banks Power Pack on my 6.9l diesel and it did improve hp and mileage. Same principle was involved by removing choke points in throughput of air/fuel and out through the exhaust. Simple things that should have been done on the stock versions IMHO.
If you find a youtube for the 460 power pack please post it!
Just for fun I posted a Youtube video
Where an old 460 was transformed into a speed demon 600 hp or more!!!
This afternoon I got an ad from Tesla who made a new car with over 1000 horsepower
Well that's progress, but I like cars that you can still tinker with the most!!!
In the Netherlands there is a video of (typical Dutch humor)
