I was 4 and have no idea what I was doing, I don't remember watching it until later in life.
The event that sticks out the most in my memory was watching the space shuttle explode on lift off.

Nice of them to do it on my birthday 
. I was in my 20's at the time and followed the whole thing -- often on the radio. Just plain scared that something would happen and they would fail.
They credit Kennedy and he certainly started it off, but it was amazing that the program kept going with Vietnam and everything else going on back then.
