In my experience, when the master cylinder goes bad, the brake pedal goes to the floor, with no braking effect. Usually this happens at the worst possible time.
It's time for you to pull the rear drums, & look for leaking wheel cylinders & worn shoes..
Pull the front wheels & look for leaking calipers, worn brake pads. I'm guessing you have front disc brakes.
Inspect all the brake hoses & steel lines. Look for wet spots & rust.
Wet around the lid could be rust forming on the upper surface where the lid seals. Check the brake fluid level in the master.
Put new calipers on the front and removed drums on back 50% brakes on back.
Only wet seems to be around the rez tank?
could it suck air through the lid, and if it did would it matter?

No, it won't suck air through a leaking master cylinder cap gasket, just make a mess.
Check your rubber hoses for wetness, cracks, and even the steel lines which can rust in time.
That can be caused by a failing master . it shouldn't cause grabbing though, that could be an unrelated problem.
If you're not leaking anywhere and bleeding the system doesn't help I'd start by checking the booster then replacing the master. it's cheap and easy to do .
