2017 F350 Super Duty Crew Cab. Had a puddle of Diesel on the ground yesterday. Seems like my tank is leaking from the top. I am not 100% sure but I think it happens when it's running and not just sitting stationary. Is it a possible hole in on of the lines? Or something else. Anyone ever seen this in this area anything common I can check?
That is the vent on top of the tank where the fuel is likely coming from.
Do you have an auxiliary tank? Over-filling the main?
Do you try to top the tank off too much? More than one click after the automatic nozzle shut off?
I figured I get some flack for calling it out as a Gas Tank. No aux tank. Just the main tank. I don't top it off or overfill I just run it till it auto shuts off. It's full right now though. I filled it up a little over a week ago. It's been sitting in the garage until Wed when I drove it about a mile then parked it. Then yesterday noticed the leak. I moved it out of the garage yesterday checked it out but did not notice even a slow leak. I sprayed it off last night to see what it looked like this am. It leaked last night but its hard to tell how much could be sitting on top of the tank guard where it's dripping down.
Guys have had the check valve leak on the vent, it looks like the little brown cap on yours is missing if that's what I think I'm looking at in the picture?
I did more digging and see the brown cap you mention in another post. There was mixed info if that vent valve is serviceable or if its a tank replace. I am pretty sure that is where its leaking from now though. Just surprised its leaking when parked flat. Seems like a log time to be in the garage for it to be fuel expansion related.
It looks like it was the brown cap on the fuel vent. Fuel vent is fused to the tank but the brown cap is replaceable. Cap was about $60 USD. Dealer was able to order it. I was never able to find it on a parts diagram. Thanks for all the help!
So this plastic cap blew off again. Ironically this time it was after filling up. I found it on top of the tank Silicon inside blown out from the plastic cap. Any idea what causes this?
The vent cap or vent valve? The vent valve leaks diesel when the tank is full and the cap is not on so it seems to be working. I do not think the valve is a check valve that prevents water/debris from coming in which is what the vent cap is for. The vent valve is fused to the tank. It's not a replaceable part. The cap is replaceable.
it should vent small amounts of presure instead of blowing the cap. Or blowing fuel out. I would replace all in that area. Also could be a bad install.
