I am restoring my dad's 1978 f100 ranger new 351M is in and ready to start but as soon as I return the start switch from crank to run the engine shuts off I feel I have a wire wrong. anybody have any experience with this?
mike thanks I ck out the switch it was bad but also the relay mounted on LH firewall was bad so I jumped around it and the engine started wiggled the key and could get the engine to keep running so I need a new switch and a new relay you got any info where I might be able to buy them?
X2 on most auto parts stores (Napa, Auto Zone, Oreilly's, Pep Boys) should have or can get an ignition switch (with or maybe cheaper without the key and tumblers). If you just want the switch (no tumblers) and want to swap your tumblers in, there are threads that cover that.
I am pretty sure there is NO "relay" on the L/H side to jump. But is that L/H as standing facing the engine and looking under the hood? Then that is the passenger side or the R/H side of the truck. Always refer to sides a setting behind the steering wheel or pass/Dvr.
Now on the R/H side there is a starter solenoid that has the main battery +- connections and 2 90* elec connections. And that is I bet what you jumped to get the truck to start. FYI those can internally weld/stick closed and when you let the key off the starter will stay engaged. Sound like a car crash, you have to take away power (yank a battery terminal quick), then replace the starter solenoid.
it is on drive side on the firewall right above where the wiring comes into the engine comp. there is a small meatal box that bolts to the firewall about 1.5" X 1" X1" inside there is a set of contact points that close when it is activated .There are 3 pins on the bottom. it is rusted badly, and the points don't operate, need a new one, only I don't know what it's called, I need to know what it is so I can try to find one.
It sounds like a horn relay, but those are normally on the pass side inner fenderwell a little further back from starter solenoid on earlier models 73-77?
Hay folks I just found a wiring diagram that showed this part is a trailer brake control. So Thanks to everyone that responded to my thread. PROBLEM SOLVED!!
