Burning up Ignition Coils
I am working on a 1985 F150 4.9L. The truck wasn't running well when I bought it. I started with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, module, new fuel pump, battery & terminals. replaced 3 lifters, 1 bent pushrod and freed 2 sticky lifters. After I got it all back together I wasn't getting any spark from the new coil. The old coil was bad by the way. I had voltage going into the coil on both sides but nothing coming out. i went and bought a third coil and put it on. It started up and purred like a kitten. We drove it around the block and parked it so i could finish tying up some wiring (which is brittle but working.) I tried starting again to show my neighbor and nothing. No spark out of the coil again. I will mention that it appears that someone before me has removed some vaccuum lines and some EGR stuff. I also do have a drain on the battery that i have yet to find. Someone has replaced the ford alternator with a 1 wire gm alternator and added a gear reduction starter. the module is on the distributor, push on style rotor and coil above the fuel pump on a bracket. Any ideas as to why i am burning up coils? do i have the wrong coil? It is also an EECIV and i have seen where others recommend going to the duraspark ignition. Super Frustrating please help!
