shocks

Thanks for every ones help. I am going to replace my shocks on my 2003 Excursion. Any suggestions on brand, model, etc? I do pull a travel trailer but other than that it is just normal usage.

Thanks again!

2wd or 4wd?
The Bilstein B6 4600 shocks I installed awhile ago are nice, but they have gone up quite a bit.

I second that for Bilstein 4600s. I’m on my fourth set.

How many miles are you getting out of a set of the Bilsteins?
I have about 40k on ours and they still seem fine.

I average around 53,000 miles per set.
Did some math and that’s what I came up with.

Stock ride height?

For me, the KYB Monomax was awesome. Great ride and I ran them 100K before replacing. I think only one was really bad at that point.

Now I'm ~4" over stock ride height and run the bilsteins. It's a little rougher than I like, but still a decent ride.

I run the Monroe gas units on my 4wd F350 and like them. You can get them at your local parts store and they have a life time warranty...which I have utilized a couple years ago as the originals were installed somewhere around 2004! The only thing I don't like about them is they are yellow, so I spray them with gray bedliner material prior to installation which does not affect the warranty btw...

which shock you will like is subjective but in general a mono tube ( bilstein) shock is more durable than a twin tube ( rancho )
the larger the tire you run the more valving you are going to want.

for stock-ish size tires the KYB Mono Max is hard to beat. Oversize tires the Bilstein 5100 is popular

OP,

You can't go wrong with Bilstein 4600's or KYB MonoMax shocks. These are both gas-charged monotube shocks that fit a 2003 4WD Excursion with the stock ride height.

For an OE-like feel check out the Monroe Monro-Matic Plus shocks. These are gas-charged twin-tube shocks.

As other members have stated a lot about selecting shocks is the feel/ride you're after. Here's a chart we put together comparing monotube shocks to twin-tube shocks.

Let us know if we can be of any further assistance. We'll be happy to help!

Bump

From opinions on here, several years back I bought the KYB MonoMax's and I can't stand the ride.

They turned my 2003 V10 4WD into a rattle box.I hate driving the truck and I'm tired of apologizing to passengers, so I don't drive it too often. I've only put a couple thousand miles on them hoping they would loosen up, but nope, still hate them.

I want the smooth factory ride, I don't off-road. Stock height and wheel size.

Any other thoughts?

Could there be a difference in ride between the stock/Eddie Bauer/Limited editions?

Mine is the Eddie Bauer - it's just never made sense to me that the recommended shock rides so rough on my truck.
