If you are really pulling lots of heavy trailers I would go with a newer truck. I towed commercial with a 1985 460 in 2014 and the replacement parts per month to keep it running were higher than the payments on a newer used truck.
2005 plus trucks have so much better brakes and tow capacity it isn't even funny.
I do tow a 3000 pound boat with my 1979 400. That doesn't have issues, it's the running it every day heavy that seemed to be hard on them and my billfold
Good luck
The usual mods for towing are four barrel carb and unrestricted exhast, getting a different rear end with a higher ratio, and smaller tire diameter. Headers help if you want to rev it up a bit but the stock manifolds aren't bad for low rpm torque. If your compression is low a rebuild helps too.
The 400 Ive got has a fresh rebuild, stock cam from early 70s 400, holley truck avenger, straight pipes with some 12 inch cherry bombs, and it has about the same pull as my 2015 F350 with a 6.2 gas at low rpms (even with 33s on my 1979) Way more pull than the 2000 5.4 that I had a few years ago. 6.2 has more pull at higher rpms but it likes to get revved up.
Depending on the engine, your location for statutes, there are other things to look at as well. Maybe post in the engine specific forum and ask about that there.
Good luck!

This truck has the dual piston brakes, and drums in the back. Just went through the whole system and replaced lines and seals. It has good stopping power. The low end torque is ok, for a 76 I would say. Has a 2bbl, cherry bombs on with no packing left lol. I don't believe it has a cam, but does not burn any oil previous owner claims they had the motor rebuilt. It is a 390. The rear end is 4:10.
