I live up here on an island so I have two choices, rebuild it myself or have one sent up. I have only been part of a rebuild once under guidence , on an AOD. So I guess my question is do you think this one is worth saving And in your opinion what went wrong. Here are all the symptoms. Rebuilt C4 installed 1998, 3500 mile road trip W/ tow. blew trans line and all fluid. drove for three years since. since day one: 1)slight slip from 1 to 2 only when creeping, under normal power fine. 2)Hard to get it into gear when on incline or hill. within the last two months: 1)slight knocking noise under load. 2) buzzing noise off and on in reverse 3) and finally when I held the brake and torqued it in reverse to locate the knock it sounded like teath ripping off the gears. Which brings us to now, No reverse. If I rebuild it It takes two weeks to get parts up here so any info will be useful. Thank you.
Tam,
Can you shift the tranny into and out of Park?
It sounds like you've burn the clutch. Do you still have 1st? Are you sure your not running in 2nd and 3rd?
C4s are not a heavy tranny and heavy towing can do a real number on them. You may want to switch to a C6 if its not too inconvenient.
Have you dropped the pan yet? What have you seen?

living on an island the word convience does not exist. I ended up ordering a rebuild, as ordering parts parts takes a min of two weeks. I couldnt afford to tear into it and find out I needed something else ( another two weeks) Now I have all the time in the world to look at the bad one and in the end gives me a spare. Im sure I was in drive when the knocking was occurring.
One question though. When I would drive without warming the truck up (park) the knocking would be more pronounced. would the residual heat from the torque converter spinning be enough to make a difference? Note: we have so little road and it is always on the cool side that I never register over 100 deg. unless towing. Thank you.
Tam,
i think you are describing symptoms of low pump pressure or low fluid level. The clutch is engaging and disengaging. When its cold, fluid cannot flow as quickly and, i think, the pan runs dry as fluid cannot return to it as quickly? I'm not sure exactly what is happening. i can only tell you from the many trannies that have plagued me over the years. This causes inadequate pressure at the clutch and it enages and disengages (clunking)! If the pump is weak then the clutch would just slip. That may or may not cause a clunK.

The debris in the pan should tell the tale.
