I have an 85 f150 with the 4.9 and the 3+OD manual. Just recently I started having an issue at stops where I get stuck in neutral. I can move the shifter side to side, and front to back, but it wont actually click into any gears even though it feels like its going into the gates. It doesnt grind or anything and if I rock the shifter between 1st and 2nd with some force it will eventually pop into gear. It doesnt always happen, just at the most inconvenient times. Any ideas what this would be or how to fix this? I replaced both clutch cylinders back in October, and was told the clutch was replaced just a few months before I bought it about a year ago. I saw some people say it could be the bushing inside the trans, or a loose shift linkage not lining up, but the shifter doesnt feel sloppy. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Most transmissions have a interlock system where it won't let the shifter put the trans into two gears at once. If things are getting worn inside the shifter rails, when you pull it out of one gear, the trans may be out of gear but the shifter mechanism and the interlock are not quit there and it thinks it's still in gear and won't let you get any other gear.
Not sure of the ins and outs of your particular trans, but I would consider this an opportunity to swap in a 5 speed tranny.
Yea I was contemplating a zf or m5OD, but its my daily and my other car is currently down getting rebuilt. Ill see if I can pop the cover on the top off and look inside to see if anything is binding
Ill check it again, but I checked back when I did the clutch cylinders because I thought it was that and it seemed fine. Its just odd that if I pump the clutch it doesnt fix it, and that it doesnt happen every time.

If the firewall is moving when you press the clutch pedal then pumping is not going to do anything.
Now the firewall may not move every time and why it is doing what it dose.
From what I have seen posted the firewall dose not have to move vary much to cause problems.
