Cam position sensor failure! Got really lucky to find a mechanic in a small town on a Saturday afternoon of a holiday weekend. '02 with 205k, 7.3 PSD. Also very happy this didn't happen on our 2800 mile round trip vacation last year when we were in some very remote areas.
I've been keeping a couple in the glove box for ages. Even the Motorcraft branded ones are hit or miss. Some will run for years, others only months.
I honestly can't imagine going as far as the end of my driveway without tools, a couple cps, a spare ipr, a serpentine belt under the seat... I could go on.
why did you need a mechanic ?
looks like you just changed it roadside ?
Didn't know for sure it was the sensor until the mechanic plugged in his code reader. He offered to change it out, I wanted to support him since he saved my a**. Plus I didn't take tools with me on such a short trip, I know, I know.
One great thing about the 7.3s is that not only are they reliable, but the more remote you get the more the mechanics know everything about the 7.3 PSDs. He told me to NEVER get rid of the Excursion. My wife just rolled her eyes lol
Travel with forscan capability, tools, spare Motorcraft sensors.
i specify Motorcraft because many of the sensors, specifically the icp and cps have ford patented logic on the chips, the generics get close but will cause all sorts of running and drive ability issues, Not worth the cost savings imo
Didn't know for sure it was the sensor until the mechanic plugged in his code reader.
Quick roadside troubleshooting tip: no RPM rise on cranking is a solid indication of a dead CPS.
One of those "ask me how I know". I keep a "spare" CPS (known-good used, I'm cheap) and HF cheapie tools for that swap.
I cringe at your feet hanging out there in traffic, with nothing blocking you from getting hit in the boat and rolled over...but you clearly had a spotter.
