History: passenger front blinker not working. Traced power to back of socket, no power inside of socket. I replaced the socket and blinker now works … sometimes.
observation: with headlights off, all blinkers work as intended. With parking lights or driving lights on, passenger front (the one I replaced) does not blink, it stays lit.
Question: where do I start to trouble shoot? If the blinker relay was bad, why does it blink with headlights off? If I did the wiring wrong with the new socket, why does the bulb turn on at all?
As always, you guys are amazing and any help is greatly appreciated.
I’m trying to track down the ground wire for that socket. Before it grounds to anything it bundles with the headlight wires. The picture below shows a wire come from that bundle and where it grounds. Is this the ground for the headlight AND the turn signal or just the headlight? Also, I took the pictures after I removed the screw, cleaned everything up and covered in fresh paint.
Live update: fixing that ground did not fix the blinker problem. I did notice that it now is on goes slightly dim and then goes back to bright in sync with the driver side blinker. Would that still be a ground issue? If so where would the ground be for the passenger side blinker? Also, why would The ground be good when the headlights are off but bad when the headlights are on?
Clean the body & contacts on the bulb really well, even if it is new. You may have to try a few different bulbs.
Clean the contacts in the socket really well, even though it is new.
With the headlights on, right turn on, socket removed from the light body, wiggle & turn the bulb in the socket. Press the bulb in to the socket. See if you can find a sweet spot where the light blinks like it should.
Long story short, the new sockets, although correct for the dentside housing and bulb, are a little longer than stock ones. This extra length causes the wires to be pressed against the firewall enough to cause issues. I gently rerouted the wires and everything works as intended. I’m concerned about the longevity of this fix, but only time will tell. Thank you everyone for all the help and hopefully someone in the future will see this and know what to do.
