Other changes are not really needed for it run good. Ford added the 4 barrel on a stock 351w and called it a 351wHO. They also did it on the first mustangs. They came with a slightly different cam than the 2bbl engines, but the difference was very slight.

Opening up the exhaust does help, but you can do that later. The stock aircleaner even fits the 4bbl.

Huh i was told that without considerable attention 4bbl would allow for too much fuel

Not if it's a correctly sized, vacuum secondary carb.

You can use a Holley #1850 which is a 600 cfm vacuum secondary, and it will run great right out of the box. I have done several back in the day, and they were brand new carbs. That was back when they were $150 each. I see now they are over $400 each.
