Gas Truck vs. F150 Lightning EV Tow Distance Test

Well, the results are obvious if you're purchasing a truck to tow a trailer. Here's a pretty good test with both a gas and a EV towing similar trailers on one fill up.

Enjoy...

YUCK, just goes to show that if the Government sees the need to pay you $7500 to buy it can't be good.

should…should us SD guys tell the EV guys about the range on the PSD CCLBs with the 48 gallon tank, especially the 2wd ones?

Lightning buyers have to be realistic about how they use the truck. It’s probably best used as a commuter or light hauler.

If you're building an electric truck and advertising it as everything your ICE trucks used to be, but then immediately have to start making concessions about what the best case user looks like, what's really going on here?

If I want a commuter or light hauler I'm sure as hell not shopping vehicles that are 20 feet long and weigh 6,000 lbs.

Either build an electric pickup that does EXACTLY what an ICE pickup can do, or cancel the project. There is no reason to spend more money for regression.

that’s the thing though, todays half ton pickups are for the most part used as commuters ever since the ride comfort became tolerable for family transportation. Super duties are next as they become more comfortable.

Cliff notes: Electric truck has about 90 miles of range pulling an average sized travel trailer. No big deal, just factor in a 90 minute charge every 90 minutes of driving! Oh, and don't forget 20 minutes to unhook, then re hook up the trailer every time. One more thing, if you're going camping with your travel trailer, don't forget your gas generator to charge your green vehicle

The 90 miles only works on the first charge. How long does it take to go from 80 - 100% charge?? Can't be good...

All depends on your needs.

The biggest lake near me is 26 miles one way. We camp there 4 times per year. But we also do 400 mile one way and 750 mile one way. Then 3100 miles for Yellowstone next month.

So the EV doesn’t work for me. But if I camped 26 miles away 99% of the time, the Ford Lightening could work. Still like the idea of the PowerBoost more but it all depends on your needs.

don’t forget that the user has to ensure there is a place to plug in once you get there, and if there isn’t any fast charger they need an outlet for a day or two to fully charge on 110v outlets. 26 miles can become a 40 mile range draw if you have to crank up the heater or AC leaving one with a smaller reserve than ideal driving conditions.

While this is all good info for those that tow across country regularly, it's pretty much useless for the majority.

If you say so. They went almost 90 miles towing. If I only towed 52 miles in a weekend I don’t think the AC is gonna leave me stranded.

But an EV doesn’t work for me but if you tow short distances it could work. Maybe plug into the power on your site? I don’t dry camp.

Everyone is different. Many with an F-150 doesn’t tow a single thing. Hard work is driving to Home Depot. I used to be one. I had a halfton from 2004-2010 without towing. Now I tow 10k a year with a SD. If I gave up camping, an EV would be fine for my utility trailer that gets towed around infrequently.

Including that group of folx it's still not the majority of what people use these trucks for. The majority of people, myself included, need it to get groceries, go to work, bring kids to the soccer game, maybe hit Homedepot for some potting soil and some Quikrete for a walkway of stepping stones to the shed, oh and we can't forget to pick up the new dishwasher. yadayada all within 10 miles of homeport but even if it were double that, the ev truck will suit the majority just fine.

Feel free to research it for yourself as I have and you'll see.

Trucks don't ONLY tow. Versatile machine for which most peoples uses are covered above. It does have some serious cargo room compared to anything else. It would be foolish to buy one at this time if your plans revolve around towing, just saying it'll get better with time as all technology does.

IC gmc ? making a run at hvydty ev, hmm.

So according to you the majority of lightning buyers can be served equally well by an Edge sized EV and a small utility trailer for the occasional dishwasher or soil and stepping stones.

So if you are right about the Lightning’s buyer demographic, gotta hand it to ford, they really figured out how to convince soccer dads they just need an F150 to commute and once in a while get some gardening soil, but in an EPA endorsed manner.
