351ho timing

Good afternoon everyone, I have an 86 F250HD with a 351ho 4spd. I'm trying to get my timing right because it feels sluggish. It has a new distributor in it. I checked the timing and it was 7° with the vacuum advance plugged. I raised the throttle slowly to find total timing and I got as high as 20° at 3,000 rpms. I bumped my base timing to 12° and I was able to get 30°. Does that seem about right for a stock engine? Should I try advancing more? I run my vacuum advance through manifold vacuum and when I check the timing with it hooked up at idle it's 36°. Is that too much timing? I would like try to get it more snappy. It has a 670cfm truck advenger carb, 4.10s with stock tires. I plan on replacing the stock exhaust with full length headers with 2.5" dual exhaust.

Update: I messed with my timing some more and set the total timing at 32° at 3000 rpms. I now have 16° initial timing, and 32° with vacuum advance hooked to manifold vacuum at idle. It feels a little bit more peppier, a little more powerful, a little more smoother running and have no hot start issues. Does 16° of mechanical advance sound correct for a stock distributor?
