Have any of you ever had any problem out of the Autozone chain of parts stores? I bought a tranny from them and have gotten nothing but troubel. The short story is this: First tranny was cracked. Second tranny had no second gear. I put the second one in, but had to go back to college, so I told autozone they needed to fix it. No problem. they tow it to a shop which says the rebuilt tranny needs completely rebuilt. no problem says autozone. one week later they aren't done, so I ask autozone if they can get me a rental car. No problem. I go home (125 miles) and their story changes--no rental car. next week, same story. now, after three trips home (750 miles) I have a definate answer. they will not pay for anything. they will get me a new transmission, nothing else. they won't even pay the bill to have my truck towed back to my house. they don't have the core tranny I turned in, and can't get it. Any one had to deal with this level of difficulty from them? They won't even give me the numbers of thier regional offices or anything. Seems i'm up a creek.
In my opinion , Most discount auto parts stores leave a lot to be improved . But , you get what you pay for . I was leery of Autozone the first time I pulled into one of their stores & saw a guy replacing the brake pads on his car in the parking lot . They fill a niche in the automotive world . All I buy from them or any other parts store is something like oil or wiper blades . When it comes to something like a transmission , youre better off letting a shop that deals with transmissions as a specialty .
I haven't had anything near what you have had with autozone. I had a bad starter, so they checked it on their machine, well the "assistant manager" couldn't find anything wrong with it. And said since there's nothing wrong with it I can't do anything about it. Well, in the meantime I'm stuck with no truck. So, I went to Carquest and bought a starter took it home and put it in. It has now been on my truck for 3 years and an engine swap. Yep same old 300 I-6 starter on this 5.0 powered truck.

I've had a lot of problems with anything that has moving parts from Autozone. We have a "suburban" and we have had 2 different alternators. Went out 10 months apart. Autozone reimbursed us for the cost, which was great, and we ordered a new one.
On my F-150, I have had 3 different ac cycle switches, and they finally gave me a good one, so far.
In my view, it's good to go with Ford or a trusted manufactorer other than Autozone's suppliers,
Pastmaster's 1993 XLT 5.0 E40d 3.55LS Normal Cab/Long bed Loaded from the factory with aid of...MSd 6a ign/s.p. wires, blaster coil, Hypertech Chip, K&N filtercharger, Cat-back dual exhuast w/o mufflers, 3.5", echo tips, Accel distributor cap, Dark Mocha over light mocha. 5% Dark tint, Alpine Cd player/remote, Pioneer speakers.
its been my experiance that there are bad stores and there are good stores. not just AutoZone, but also Pep Boys, O'Rileys, and several others. i have had good luck with my local AutoZone, but only because i deal with one of the managers. but i have had bad experiances with them when the manager was not there.
When I had my 94 Chevy (easy guys), I put a new ac compressor on it that I got from Autozone. It went out in one week. I took it back and bought an ac delco and had now problems... til a semi turned left in front of me and totalled out the front end of my truck.Hello F250 PSD CC 4x4!
My friend got an alternator from them for his jeep. He's on his 3rd or 4th now. You get what you pay for, I never buy junk anymore. Only the best goes in my rig.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Jul-02 AT 01:00 AM (EST)]Something to consider (and something I always do)...when buying a "big ticket item", pay with a credit card. You have much more protection and recourse if you don't get what you pay for. Actually, that's the point - with a credit card, you don't have to pay until you get what you are paying for. Understand, I'm NOT talking about being dishonest and "milking" the system. Credit cards offer the consumer a good hedge against being taken advantage of.

OBTW....I have had pretty good luck with my local AutoZone. I have found their brake pads (Albany) to give the best service of any I have used. And, free lifetime replacement - which they will honor.
Welp I kind of had the same problem with the same company. I was lucky enough to be in a business law class at the time so I hit up my instructor for some free advice.
#1 Make sure you have every document and everything you have done is documented.
#2 Make sure you read, then reread, the warranty that you got with the replacement transmission. You might have got stuck with a clause or three you weren't aware of.
#3 Go down to the courthouse and file in smalls claims court for every bill you have a receipt for.
#4 Don't dick with the manager, but instead go right to the district dick in charge. Show him the papers that you filed at the court house and see if his attitude changes. While your missing with him let him know that you are going to go the local papers and talk to the auto feature editor about the problems you have been having (that should scare the hell out of him). The auto feature editor should love to hear from you, especially if you can back up your story with evidence against AutoZone.
I only had to mention the filing of the papers and the district dick was on the phone to his boss. Three hours later my truck was towed to a shop and repaired without another word of cost from AutoZone.
Hope this helps.
PS they even covered my filing cost, but I did sign an agreement not to talk to the newspaper.
