Hello. my 2001 e350 5.4 econoline only blows cold air when accelerating. i recently charged the AC and at idle it blows around 80 degrees, at higher rpms it will go down to 65 degrees. any ideas what could be causing this?
Who charged your A/C system, what refrigerant was used? Were the pressures monitored for a time after the charging?
You don't define if the air flow is affected when engine is under acceleration---that would suggest the ducting system doesn't have sufficient vacuum. I have a 2000 E-250 and a 2005 E-350 both of which will achieve temps at the dash vents approaching 40* F when at freeway speeds, around town or a really hot & humid day idiling I'll have temps in the middle to upper 50*---all that would be considered normal.
Your described symptoms suggest the A/C system is possibly not charged correctly or has other issues with the components; compressor, condenser, orifice tube.
Thank you Airborne, i'm sorry i wasn't more clear about the problem. the airflow is the same whether i accelerate or at idle. the only difference is the temperature of the air coming out of the vents. its not as "cold" at idle
Hello JWA, thank you for the reply. i charged the a/c using a robin air r134a machine, the low side pressure was about 45-50 psi after fully charging the system, high side around 300 psi. i also suspect a a/c component has failed but not sure which part to start checking

I don't believe your high side should be too much above 150 PSI. How did the system perform before you charged it? What prompted the re-charge?
Sounds like you are low on freon
You could or ought to check the cycling time rates in the book to verify this
Most of us just do it with the gauges and have not looked at a book for years, but I'd guess yours is cycling too often
Which is another indication of low freon
Good luck
You are looking for roughly 25 to 30 lbs on the low side with the system running
Do not overcharge or it will never get cold
