I have a 1990 f150 5.0 4x4 with the e40d, the trans went out yesterday. I was wondering if there is any thing in the rebuild that should be upgraded. I built my engine about a year ago I used a 99 explorer 5.0 and freshened it up, I know the 5.0 HO is a little stronger than my original engine. Just wondering if I should do anything besides just a basic rebuild.

What "went out" on it?
The E4OD is 100% electronic controlled so any sensor out of range can cause transmission issues. Just trying to verify you have a mechanical issue before spending money for no reason.
Drove it a short trip down a back road by my house yesterday, turned around and had nothing, tried several times to get it to go into gear. I came back a little later with my wife and other truck to tow it and it took all gears so I tried to drive it home. It wouldn't shift out of 1st and eventually started sliping.
I'm not one to know electronic issue from mechanical on the E4OD so I won't address that, but Randy does bring up a great point. Proper diagnosis is priority 1.
If you need a rebuild, updating to 1995+ specs would be a good idea. My 1996 has 341,000 miles on it with only fluid & filter changes. The last 96,000 miles have been behind a mildly built 351W as well. I do use 4x4 Low any time I feel like I'm having to push it hard to move at low speed but otherwise no special treatments.
I would suggest at least running the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests and Stored Code display just to see if anything is flagged as wrong. Is the trans fluid level good and the color reddish?

Very true. I’m sure you have seen many more threads than I have about a transmission rebuild or replacement and still having the same problem.

Are you sure it is in first and not in limp mode? Can you manually shift into different gears or are still only in the one gear? Manually selecting 1 and 2 engages different clutches than if you were in drive.
You might also want know that if you need to order parts it is an Electronic 4 speed OverDrive (E 4 Oh D ) transmission and not an “e forty d” so you don’t get a weird look from the parts person at the trans shop.
Do you have any idea of the mileage on that trans? when they're going our from normal clutch wear you'll find the trans takes a warm up and some extra patience to go into gear.
You can move the shifter, trans only takes gear sometimes then you will only have 1st and it will start slipping. When I got home yesterday I started the truck and went in reverse just fine went to drive and it lasted about 10 feet and had nothing no reverse or forward gears. Can anyone tell me what year trans with work with my truck I am considering buying a used one if its cheap enough. Right now I am slowly redoing the truck its not a driver yet I just drive it around the house. I have the bed off right now and doing body work on it.
Placing the shifter in 1 has the same result as drive? I’m no transmission expert but that doesn’t make sense to me. According to the chart you should still have reverse since it doesn’t use the same clutches. I would test the MLPS before throwing the transmission in the scrap pile.

A 1990 E4OD for a small block will be a direct swap. You can use a newer one (1995+) to get the more updated model, but will need to swap the solenoid pack to the '89-94 version. Make sure you get a 4x4 trans, and make sure it is for a small block gas engine (not diesel, and not 460 big block). The older models had the protection diodes in the solenoid pack, while the newer trucks had those in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Have you pulled codes yet? The other guys are trying to ensure you diagnose this properly.
