okay,so today we got the hood lined up fair(about as good as the stock thing is gonna get for us)and it won't stay up!Whenever we raise it,it slowly goes back down to less than a foot from the latch...we sprayed WD-40 at all five pivot points last week trying to get it to work right...did we mess up bad?Other than that,it is working fairly well...thanks...
I recall Coley said he installed new hinges. If the hinges are also new, I suspect they are 1/2 turn too loose. This is what my hood did after I installed the new springs in mine. May be time to don you helmet and athletic cup and let the fun commence. Ensure your loved ones know your blood type and be careful. Do you have a spring installation tool? AKA short piece of exhaust pipe with a notch? Yell if not and we'll describe this marvelous tool that barely works.
Yes,the hinges and springs are new...I bought new hinges and they came assembled with new springs...don't tell me I have to mess with those springs...I know they are dangerous...
I mispoke in my last post but you figured it out I see. I can't tell for sure without looking but it sounds like you need to re-install with 1/2 turn more preload. My hood did the exact same thing. I bought a tool that amounted to an 8 inch piece of exhaust pipe. A small square notch will catch the spring. The other end of pipe needs a hole drilled through both sides so you can turn it with a large screwdriver. Wear safety goggles and gloves for sure.
Terrific...$150 for new hinges and now a good shot at serious injury...I'll just get me a long piece of thick dowel rod tomorrow...cause I ain't taking none of this stuff back off...
Sorry...I'm back now...didn't mean to be rude...I think I'm gonna try to get some of that slickem off of there tomorrow and see if that helps...thanks for the words of wisdom.
the slickum is not the problem. As with most of us who have replaced hoods, springs, entire hinge sets etc. , each hood is slightly different. The reason your hood is dropping is that the hinges are trying to hold up a big mass of metal. As Dewayne said, you need to tighten the springs one half turn. I did it on mine and it was a biblical experience, ie, crying, gnashing of teeth and sitting in sackcloth and ashes and blood (mine). FAB A TOOL, steal a tool, borrow a tool, You can't do it with channel locks, trust me. I still am missing a chunk out of a finger.
Wear eyewear, footwear, gloves, bulletproof vest, chain mail suit.
It may have held it up because of the friction/rust and then you reduced the friction. Bottom line is that the more you used it and broke the rust through, the lower the hood would have sunk.
In all fairness I must say that trying the sticky spray is necessary. Will it work? Probably not, but it may. I believe in doing the easiest cheapest things first! I don't know what you had in mind, but I was thinking some sort of spray adhesive. If it doesn't work, then you can clean it all off when you take the hinges apart someday. Good luck, John
