When I build my new exhaust, I don't want it to rust, but I don't want to spring the extra cash for stainless pipe. Has anybody used some sort of coating to prevent rust? Maybe engine enamel? Or does anybody know of something made specifically for exhaust?
There is no such thing as a rust free exhaust system.
The closer you get to it the more it costs, and I believe stainless is the top of the heap. However, you may want to look into ceramic coatings, aluminization, paint, heck you have abunch of options.
I would start by searching these forums for reference information. This has come up a number of times here I believe.
Am I to assume this will be on youre 67 resto? Personally, if I were doing a resto, I would want only the highest quality components to be used in the rebuild. I am currently running a complete stainless steel exhaust system, and I will never go back to aluminized. After you add up the costs of whatever substance you find to coat the pipe with, plus youre time and effort (Assuming you apply it), you probably wont be too far from the price of stainless to begin with. Are you completely replacing the exhaust, or just certain components?
