C6 tranny adjustments

I am getting familiar with my F250, and would like to know if I can adjust the C6 tranny. If I stay out of the throttle, it will shift from 1st to 2nd fine, but if I give it some serious gas it will not shift into 2nd until I let off of the gas and then get back on.

Also happens sometimes from 2nd to 3rd.

Ideas?

Yes you can adjust the Band, Its the stud sticking out of the drivers side with the lock nut. You need to get a new lock nut before you do this as it has a seal made to it. Id haave to look up the procedure though

Factory service manual says "Remove and discard locknut. Adjust screw to 10 ft-lbs torque, then back off 1 1/2 turns, install new locknut and tighten lock nut to 35-40 ft-lbs."

Adjusting the band will not help your shift problems.

Mine did that and I replaced the vacuum modulator and problem disappeared. Make sure that it's getting vacuum to it and maybe replace it. One thing is that there is a small pin that is magnetic and "normally" comes out with the modulator. If not you have to get a magnet and remove it before putting in the new one. It will fit into the hole of the modulator then put the modulator back in.

That band adjustment is just for the 2nd gear I believe anyway, but I think I used 1 turn because it was easier to gauge while laying on my back under the truck.

I think that the manual says it is to be adjusted using INCH-pounds of torque (not FOOT pounds).

It would make a big difference...

Could someone please explain to me what the Modulator Valve does, and hard difficult is it to change. I can't seem to find a reference for it in the manual.

it modulates stuff. actually, it controls shift points, runs by vacuum and check first if the line from the valve to the back of the engine is intact and doesnt leak.

if not, then simply unbolt the old valve and slam in the new one

I just checked the manual I have which is a Factory service manual printed in September of 1975. It says 10 ft-lbs just like I wrote above. What manual says to use inch-pounds?

Crumm, you are correct. I don't think the intermediate band preload procedure you have posted has changed at all since 1966 when the C6 came out.
