Scwap Yard Finds
recently got a 2001 f150 4x4 automatic truck I believe 248,567 miles. Doesn't matter if it is at start up, park , neutral. Usually always a very noticeable tapping, ticking noise is heard . I was told to check tappets for looseness. Check torque converter possibly loose bolt. And also told head gasket is blown because of water dripping from rear exhaust. I'm not a mechanic and dislike working on the scary unknown lol.
Getting ready to go to garage and start truck and try to pen point issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated and comments about water dripping from exhaust explained would be great as well.
Thanks everyone 👀
2001 f150 4x4 automatic 248,567 miles Runs and drives great. Gear shift needs adjusted and noise is irritating also noise does seem to disappear only when accelerator is accelerating.
this is only way I can figure out how to say thank You! For information!!! I can't believe that guy pulled that blown gasket on me. How embarrassing . Condensation , thank You I will never forget that from this day on. I was told it had new or rebuilt transmission in it. That's why he thinks something loose. After my Aventura underneath, I have no catalitc converters and alot of Frankenstein welds with many many pieces of pipe dual exhaust . I seen one missing bolt on front drive axel and think I have hopefully the skills set to check torque converter. Quick question I turn engine over with nut on front crank shaft? Does it matter if truck is in park? Neutral?
Thanks again for helping me out.

The tapping/ticking noise is the concern. Indicates a mechanical problem that should be diagnosed as soon as possible. If you're not mechanically inclined, then the most efficient solution is to take it into a reputable shop and have them do a diagnostic and give you an estimate for the fix. Once the problem is identified then you can decide if repair work is within your skill level or have a shop fix it.
