Got the opportunity to buy an Explorer 5.0 from a 96 to go into my 72. It currently has a 302 out of a 74 Maverick. It’s junk…runs on 6.
I know I’ll need an electric fuel pump, but will my Edelbrock 4bbl intake that is on the 74 bolt to the 96? I know I have to change out the cam gear on the distributor as well… what else? I’m running a duraspark II now. No points.
I believe the water pump is different on the two as well. If your explorer has the serpentine belt, it's a reverse rotation water pump from my recollection.
Thanks for the replies! Looks like it’s doable! I had heard at one time that a 4bbl intake won’t fit on a fuel injected engine because of the heads.
Is there any reason why I couldn’t run the serpentine belt and accessories?
None at all, and in fact with the Explorer you might actually WANT to run it!
Not that our pickup trucks need as much help with clearance as the Early Broncos do, but the very compact drive system is so nice that there's really no reason not to utilize it if you have it.
New 4G alternator, decently efficient water pump (that can be serviced without removing all the other stuff by the way!), very nice small power steering pump, good A/C compressor and a fantastic clutch and fan setup that pulls a wicked amount of air, all run off of a single easy to find and service serpentine belt. Easy to keep a spare of handy as well...
The only reason I can think of that you would decide otherwise is if something in that drive assembly did not fit with things like inner fenders or lower crossmembers. They fit very well in a Bronco engine compartment (many of us have them now) but the passenger side drive bracket and lower idler pulley hang down pretty low.
You can source the smaller idler pulley if it's just a matter of fractions of an inch, but it all depends.
Nevermind. i see it's a 4wd and that there looks to be a lot of clearance.
I forgot to mention one other aspect of change though. The distance from the fan to the radiator could change, but it sure looks like it would fit right into the area in your shroud.
Hard to tell from here at just a glance of course, but you can take some measurements and even create a bit of an extension if needed in order to keep the Explorer fan setup.
You should really like it. What transmission will you use?
my Bronco is a rocket, but a lot of that has to do with the gearing. The engine is bone stock right down to the EGR and exhaust manifolds.
But even though stock, the combination of the 4R70W, the 456 gears with Detroit Lockers and little barely 30 inch tires, it’s hard to keep them from spinning even on dry pavement. Hard to drive at all in the wet!
and even harder to keep the silly grin off my face!
yours should be much more manageable with the bulk of the big bronco on top of it versus my little bronco. But that might make it even more fun to drive.
Gotta love overdrive transmissions and low gears.
