235/86/16 tires are getting in short supply. 265/75/16 is easier to get but seem to be too wide to run on the rear of a dually. I have seen guys run spacers (because they think it looks cool and want to shorten the life of their wheel bearings) and I want to avoid that if I can. If I can't what is needed to run 265/75/16 tires on the back. Keep in mind I don't want my tires to ever think about touching and I load the truck with 3K pounds regularly.
I have 265's on all 6 positions on my dually for the past year. I did away with the dually style front wheel hub and replaced the front hub with a standard SRW style and run a SRW 16" x 7" front wheel with a 265 tire. The rears are 16" x 6" with a 1.5" steel wheel spacer and two 265's on each side. Gives me about 1" space between tires. Has worked well for me over the past year. Before changing the front back to SRW style my tire wear was horrible on the front and since the change is very good. I tow a FW and carry 2700 regularly on the 5vr hitch.
Did you need to get longer lug studs to run that wide of a spacer?
No, no modifications are needed. You first put on the inner dual tire, then the spacer goes on over the inner tire and the lug nuts are tightened. then the outer dual tire and the next set of lug nuts. The spacer has a set of lug bolts on it that the second tire is bolted to. I have a little over 1" clearance for the 265 duals.
More aggressive tread wears quicker. Getting the walnut shells mixed in for traction causes quicker wear. I try to run the Dirt Lord/Axiom in the summer and the Claw in the winter. The Axiom/Dirt Lords wear like iron, The Claws kinda wear fast. Avoid the Wardens like the plague!! They are terrible in the snow and mud, OK in dirt. It helps to have an extra set of rims and run them seasonally. Even the Dirt Lords do good in snow up to 3" or so.
