What to do folks. I've had nothing but trouble with the engine trans combo in my 52 F1 with 54 merc 256ci t87 combo.Thinking about a 302/auto combo but don't know ford engines that well.Maybe a 440/727 which I know well,no to flathead or sbchebby,I'm going to sell my Y block t87 combo to help finance the change. Its all fresh but has harmonic balancer problem. What ford combo is easy to get easy to install and has good parts available?
302 with AOD are also readily available from all of the crown Vic’s in the junkyards and they are pretty straightforward to setup with carb if you want to go that route. I just picked up a 302 out of a grand marquis for $500. It has 80k miles on it and looked perfect inside. Purrs.
I also have 302, C4, 9” in a 51 F1. If you go the 302 route, the question then becomes which transmission (C4, AOD, or later), and which 302; mid to early 70’s (flat tappet 8.5 compression), later 70’s early 80’s flat tappet 8.0 compression, mid 80’s roller cam. Check around on other threads as some have pulled the complete drive train from explorers (8.8” rear with disk brakes). Good luck.
