I've searched forums here and all over the internet, and I can't find anything conclusive about the loud moaning from my 2004 F250 5.4. Truck has 170,000 miles now, and it started out as intermittent. Now it's moaning constantly. A lot of people seem to have had the problem, but no one has said they fixed it for good. There's quite a few people who have switched out the IAC and had the problem go away, only to have it come back after a while. One person said he went through 7 IAC valves. Slow learner, I guess.
It's gotta be vacuum/airflow related. I used to stop it by blipping the throttle. Now throttle movement just modulates it. I've been driving this vehicle for 13 years, and this just popped up a few months ago. I also experienced this problem with a work truck with the same engine, but it never got fixed as far as I know. The noise sounds like the moan you get when you blow across the top of a beer bottle, only intensified by 10.
Odds are that someone here has dealt with this issue before. Anyone?
I have a 2003 Sd 5.4 that has been moaning at idle for many years. There is a hose that if you pinch it the moaning will stop and usually not start back up right away.
I just took off everything north of the lower intake for inspection and cleaning. So far, nothing obvious. I'm gonna replace the IAC, EGR regulator, and that funky diverter tube with the resonator/muffler in it. The latter doesn't have any moving parts, but 18 years of airflow might have eroded it. It's been discontinued by Ford, and I wanted to grab it now in case I really need it later. And I'm pulling the injectors for cleaning/testing while I'm in there.
Right now I'm cussing every Ford engineer in existence. I'm only 5'-9" , and I gotta lay on my ever-expanding gut across the core support to reach everything. If I was about 8 feet tall it would be much easier.
Little bit of an update- got it all back together and fired it up. No noise so far. I haven't driven it yet, so tomorrow will be the road test. I didn't change anything yet, just cleaned everything up and cleaned/tested the injectors. If Satan's Moan comes back, I'll switch out the IAC and the EGR regulator. I now have a giant sore spot just below my rib cage from laying on the core support. Good times!

I have a 4 foot step ladder I use when I climb up for engine work on my F350

That's what I was using. All that crap is buried in the back under the cowling. Sucks much.
BTW, the moan came back today, but it's intermittent. Looks like I'm doing it again when my parts get here. Really looking forward to it. Not.
At least I got a rehearsal in.
There's also a spacer between the TB and plenum that's not supposed to be there. It looks like some kind of flow straightener or diffuser. Apparently it's only supposed to be there on E350s. Weird.
