I used a pitman arm remover to pop it out but it was so rusted that it bent the stub so I had to cut it and now I am out of ideas. Do I have to get a tie rod at this point.
Maybe you've already done this, but I would soak it with good penetrating oil for a day and try the pitman arm remover again using a big hammer (and a sledge held on the back side of the arm while you hammer on it if you have someone to help).
just soak it with oil. I gave mine a few hits with a small sledge hammer from the side you cut off and it popped out. Hit it with a heavy hammer. Put the truck on some jack stands to give you more area to work / ground clearance. its just rusted in place..maybe a little heat.. beat on the old shock be patient
My vote would also be the pickle fork, a big hammer and some heat. It is press fit in there, no amount of spray lube is going to free it. How long has that nasty looking thing been on your truck? I find keeping on top of this parts replacement extends the life of the rest of the front end parts. I replaced mine with a Bilstien 5100 at 25k miles.
You need to use a pickle fork, thats the only way to get them out without damage. Just did mine last night. Flat side against the drag link, tapered towards the shock and a BFH
I dont have a picture of the tool I have but its a ball joint puller that is a forged U shape with lips on the ends of the U and a threaded rod in the center. It grabs on the outside of your pitman arm and pushes the puller threaded rod straight out.
That and a bit of penetrating oil.
You should have no problem.
As someone said above... Auto Zone. Or I got mine at NAPA.
Heres a set on Amazon
The ball joint separator and a 4lb hammer that did nothing but put rust in my eyes lol. Going to get a pickle fork Monday anyone know off hand what size works best.

Just a wide enough opening for the stud to fit in. If you get one with too wide a mouth you will struggle with it. I generally have to use the BFH to close the gap when I get done with a stubborn one like you seem to have.
