I'm new here (both to this forum & to owning an old truck). I have a 1966 F100 - inline 6, 300 with 3 on the tree. This truck has been in my family since it was bought new in 1965. Prior to owning this truck, I have never done anything to any vehicle in my life and have plans to remedy that. A short time after having the truck in my possession, the engine would not turn over and a friendly guy at a local hardware store determined it was because of the fuel pump.
I replaced the fuel pump, fuel lines and hoses and am able to drive it once again. However, there is still "something" off:
Truck doesn't always want to turnover on the first attempt
When I give it a little gas, it helps but I hear a squeal
While in Neutral, the truck will just turn off sometimes
When trying to shift up from 1st to 2nd, it has been getting stuck and doesn't easily move into 2nd
Right after I replaced the fuel pump, none of the above was going on (which they were prior to replacing it). But now they are back and I'm back to the drawing board. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Welcome to FTE first off! These are the best trucks to learn to wrench on, sounds like you have a great family Heirloom to enjoy!
By turn over... you mean run..? In other words, it turns over, but doesn't run/start, cranky no starty... glad you got a fuel pump in, next step would be replacing the Cap/rotor/points/plugs and possibly plug wires, the squeal is probably due to your water pump/alt belt being loose, might as well put a new one on while the hoods up, adding some seafoam to a tank of fuel should help kinda clean the carb, but for best results, it more than likely needs a rebuild.
Shifting from first to 2nd, you need to head towards R just a bit, then continue on to 2nd, this is due to the bushings being worn out and need replacing.
Did you put a fuel filter inline before the carb?
Buy a good manual and a good set of tools and enjoy it for years to come, you can do most anything on these old trucks with a basic set, and once you start... well, welcome to the sickness of Slickitis!
....as Pickupman says above, you have a good opportunity to learn a lot on that truck. Time to do some research and understand the basics of tuning ignition, fuel and general nuts and bolts. He gives good suggestions, so focus on one at a time. As far as this website, there are all the answers you need here and a good service manual will help. When looking for advice, try to use the correct descriptive terminology...you'll learn it. That will save you some time, trying to weed through advice that doesn't address your trouble. For example, as stated above, "Doesn't turn over" means that when you turn the key, the engine doesn't spin or may spin with some "labor". That's usually a battery/starter problem. Doesn't "fire", means that the engine turns but doesn't start/run. That's usually ignition or fuel. All the symptoms that you're addressing mean different things....and addressing them specifically will help get to the root of your problem more directly. Best of luck with your truck!!
I would echo the advice to get a shop manual. Very valuable resource and full of interesting info. You can find an original set or a new reproduction. they also are available in digital form, so you have your choice.
