In Alberta here there is a lot of people here that want to seprate from the rest of Canada. Also wanting to come are Sask., and parts of B.C. We are sick and tired of the crap and all our money going to the east. I have heard that some of the western states are also in the same boat!? There seems to be little or no representation for us out east. Toronto has just as more people than all of Alberta combined, so who gets to make the decision? So heres the question should the western provinces of Canada and the western states of the US seprate and become one? Let me know your thoughts?

Several years ago Monroe County Florida ("The Keys") *officially* seceded from the US Union.
The *officially* declared themselves a separate and sovereign Nation.
The National Guard set up a roadblock at the head of US1 (the only road into and out of the keys). And "starved" the inhabitants into dropping the sovereignty and rejoining the fold.
Having transited this roadblock several times myself, I can state based on personal experience the ownership of any given goods was not an issue - ALL - goods (larger in volume than a couple of bags of groceries) were effectively blocked from entrance.
FWIW.
P.S. The even made their own flag, which can be seen prominently displayed in a lot of places to this day.
Canada is a great nation because it is one nation. Don't let obfuscating issues get in the way. If you allow one schism to begin, there's no way to stop the cracking.
But then again, maybe that's good for us in the lower 48. I covet that land up there and would love to have you join us.
Exactly how far along is this? Any legislation? Just grumbling? I haven't heard a whit about this but lately have had only one ear on the news.
Alberta secedes and becomes sovereign. Then Calgary says, "the province is getting fat while we pay too much, we need to secede". Whereas a suburb of Calgary says....

It's gettting NO WHERE. It's a bunch of hot air and it will never happen.
I posted on this topic re Quebec separating from Canada in another post. This topic gets me steaming mad. I think it's the most assinine idea to come down the pike, and I view all those who support it as traitor's to the nation.
Canada is about more than tax revenue, and just because you happen to live in a part of Canada that is blessed with a wealth of natural resources does not make you any more entitled to them than any other Canadian citizen.
I agree that our government is not properly representative of the people of the different regions of the country, that's a government problem, not a problem with the country.
This is one case where I strongly agree with motto "Love it or Leave it."
I think you Canadians are forgetting one very imortant lesson when it comes to succession.
The U.S. tried the same thing in 1860 and paid for it with a death toll of over half a million dead. It also took the Southern states almost a 100 years to catch back up to the rest of the country.
Think of the cost before you decide on the act. It is easier to alter legislation than war.
I don't want anyone getting the idea that this is actually a movement with any kind of support. IT'S NOT.
War? Not a chance!
There are some hardcore people out there (like maybe a few hundred), but there's just as many who would rather rejoin the British Monarchy or cozy up to China.
People joke about it over a few beers, but it is NOT a serious idea in any way, shape, or form.
Originally posted by sinjin I think Caifornia should separate and take Hawaii with it. Now that would be a country.
Having lived in Hawaii and being familiar with local opinions of mainland hauoles, I can't help but wonder why you'd want to do such a terrible thing to the Islands.....
