As a Texas who has recently married a Canadian and spend 1/2 our time in BC, I have heard this same thing "over a few beers". (My you Canucks can drink some beer!) I would personally love for the Western Provices to join the US... it would make my life easier. But, in reality, and no offence here, the problem as I see it is political apathy among the populace. You are getting walked on out West by Ottowa because you (collectively)are letting them! No elected Senate and an appointed PM. My favorite joke: want to make a Canuck apologize? Step on his toe. BTW, I love your country and am trying to bring as many US dollars to you as I can and live there permenantly, just do something about this gun registration debacle, PLEASE!.

We likes our beer.
Elected Senate - I couldn't agree more, it's the first step toward more equal regional/provincial representation.
Appointed PM? I don't get this one.
Each party elects a PM canidate - as does the US.
Each party campaigns to win "ridings", he with the most ridings wins. Ridings are divided based on population, regardless of geographical extent. A riding in downtown Toronto may be a few blocks in size, I believe the entire NWT/Yukon have something like 5 ridings. (I should know that off the top of my head, if my granddad were still alive, I've be gettin' a cuff across the ear right now.)
If anything, it's a more democratic process than the electoral college. TOO DEMOCRATIC IMHO.
Unfortunately, the majority of the population of Canada rests in Ontario and Quebec. As such, and given our system, they will always have a greater say come election day. Perhaps that's only fair.
Don't even get me started on the gun registration thing.
I dont' think that it will ever come to a fight (war) we're Canadians. Its not really in our nature to go out and pick a fight. But there is a very strong movement going on. Not many people will talk about it, but they are out there. I have found that most are rural residents in Alberta. They have been having to put up with a lot of crap from the east. I don't blame them one bit for wanting out from under the thumb of eastern control. Wonderful ideas like gun control are a prime example or how the BSE was handled with the US. Sorry but I don't think that anyone that wants to seprate is a traitor. Remember freedom of speech?

They came out with a new breed of pig that doesn't have a spine. They are called Prime Ministers!!!
Originally posted by tmk411 In Alberta here there is a lot of people here that want to seprate from the rest of Canada. Also wanting to come are Sask., and parts of B.C. We are sick and tired of the crap and all our money going to the east. I have heard that some of the western states are also in the same boat!? There seems to be little or no representation for us out east. Toronto has just as more people than all of Alberta combined, so who gets to make the decision? So heres the question should the western provinces of Canada and the western states of the US seprate and become one? Let me know your thoughts?

OK, for discussion's sake only . . .
So, California has an the 5th largest economy in the world? And recently deposed Gov. Gray Davis put the State into $35 BILLION + debt. OK, please consider this.
California should suceed from the USA, organize as its own soverign nation, and threaten to develop nuclear weapons (which it does already at Lawence Livermore Labs), and demand that the USA pay billions to California to (pay off our debts and ) combat terrorism and other nasty threats. If the USA resists, it could withhold all shipment of all of its agricultural goods (a major portion of America's diet) to the USA.
Hunger would bring America to it's knees. And the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia would become a world power, maybe even with its own seat on the United Nations.
While I agee at some level and admittedly haven't read all the replys I will offer a couple of elements to consider. Have you considered the benifits that the larger populace has brought to the table? Are you ready to form your own defense system and will you have the resouces to do so? There is still strength in unity.
Then where do you stop this seperation? If you live in Washington state, the majority of the populace is in the Puget sound area and usaully vote for the liberals while the rest of the state doesn't get represented. Should they split the state? And on a more mocroscopic level. I was raised in a large slim rectangle of a county. The second largest city in the state was at the other end and used the lions share of the revenue on the roads, sherrifs ect while we got the scraps, so to speak. So where does this kind of division end?
Odds, yes but Kalifornia will unltimately self destruct, or fal in to the ocean, so no biggie anyways....you do not want MY opinion on the majority of Kalifornia....
I used to think California mostly sucked, then I actually went there. And by avoiding all the citys we found it to be a very nice place. I think Hollyweird has given the whole state a bad rap, although we sure had a lot of bunny-huggers from California come to Alaska with their profound wisdom on saving us from ourselves.

I think you make an excellent point!
America would be an EXCELLENTY COOL PLACE - if we could just get rid of the $%%^^*&^%$#@*&^%$)*(&^$ people.
. . . well, all of them but me and my Redneck girlfriend, anyway
I also find some sad, ironic justice in the Californian that went to Alaska and started spouting some crap about bears rights and how they weren't really dangerous. A brown bear had him for lunch last summer.
