I need help troubleshooting a voltage problem to my fuel pump. The vehicle is a 1987 E150 Econoline van, fuel injected straight 6.The engine crank's fine but will not start. If I hot wire the pump it start's fine. The owners manual refers to a fusible link near the starter solenoid, but it checks ok(if I'm checking the right one)The repair manual I have does not show an electric fuel pump in wiring diagrams?? Can anyone begin advising me as to where to start. Also.if I hot wire it and drive, what problems will I cause?
There is a relay to control the switching of the fuel pump. Look for that relay (relay center in eng comp) check for voltage in and out, but, only check for voltage when key is turned to the on position.
It will go on for about 3-4 seconds then turn off, voltage will be present while cranking.
If there is voltage in, but the relay is not energizing It’s the relay
How are you hotwiring it?
Yes you can drive it hotwired, but don’t leave the pump on if not running the engine
There is a fuse, a relay and an inertia switch in the wiring of the pump. the inertia sw should be behind the kick panel on the pass side below the dash. check to make sure the button is "in". Check fuse and relay for power in and power out.
