My grille was chrome at one time, but now mostly surface rust. I am trying to clean it up but there is no chrome left in many spots. I'm wondering if I could rough it up and paint it cream or ivory like the 56's with painted grilles were. Anyone done this? or will it just flake right off? Thanks Greg
I think I'll see what it would cost to get it blasted. I kinda hate to put good money after bad. It has dents, etc, but a repop is 5-600, I really dont want to spend that $$$. Thanks guys.
I would take it to a chrome plating shop and have it "de-chromed" in an electro-chemical tank. Chrome shop should not charge much for this process. Once the chrome is gone I would scuff it down good with a scotch brite pad and then apply a couple of coats of a good DTM 2K primer. Next fix the dents and paint with desired color.
You could try PPG Metal etch & then metal cleaner. Years ago my brother had some chrome Crager SS rims on his 75 camaro that were pitted / rusted and he asked me to paint them. I scuffed the chrome with 80 grit then used PPG Metal etch followed by their metal cleaner and I sprayed the rims with a satin black paint. I was just home a few weeks ago and saw his camaro and surprising he still had those rims on it and they are holding up very well.
I even asked his if he got them repainted (they still looks that good) and he said no.
