chrome grille bubbling options

So my 2008 F350 XLT developed a problem over the winter. The chrome on the grille started bubbling across the top. I know i could just replace it, but a new one costs over $400. I have also given thought to buying an fx4 grille or a black xl grille and having it painted to match the body color. But then i was wondering, what would it take to remove the chrome and paint my existing grille to match the body color?
Does anybody know how to remove the chrome on a plastic grille? Or has anyone painted their grille and left the chrome bumper?

I bought a 2011 xl that had a black grill and changed it to a chrome. The black is one piece whereas the chrome is several pieces.
I read a post here by somebody that painted a chrome and said its not a good idea. I'd be interested in your findings if you can remove chrome from plastic.
