Gas Mileage

I need to get myself another F-250 and I'm wondering if there is a noticeable difference in the fuel mileage between the 2020+ 6.7L with the 10 speed trans. and the older 6 speed transmissions?

Yes! The guys with the 10 speed transmissions are reporting 1 to 2 MPG improvement.

Thanks... Good to know, that helps me make up my mind on a used truck. I want a new one, but there's not a lot available to choose from.

One of my son in laws has a '17 F250 with the 6.7 and a 6 speed. He gets up to 23 mpg at 60 mph and 17 in daily driving. Not bad but the 10 speeds will do better. Also the driving conditions and gear ratio has a lot to do with it. I had a '17 F350 dually with the 6.7 and 4.10 gearing and the 6 speed. It would get 15 to 16 mpg in my daily driving but only 16 to 17 mpg hwy depending on conditions and speed.

I just helped out my buddy recently and delivered some patio furniture to Penfield, NY. I probably did about 180 miles round trip and started with a full tank. The I-90 eastbound past Buffalo is fairly just level driving with a few spots having hills; that also includes some city driving as well. I kept it on cruise at 65 mph and refilled when I got back to the Buffalo area. I got 20.4 mpg hand calculated. I have the 3.55s. I have seen 18ish on my road trips to KY but Kentucky is very hilly. I was at 65 to 75 on those trips. Now daily driving my truck, I've slowed down some on the expressway where it's 65 mph, I usually do 58 mph or so, add in the hills I climb go to and then coming back home with a little city driving, I'm at 15.5 to 16.5 mph being easy on the throttle.

Like has been said, with the extra 4 gears in the 10R140, there has to be more miles to the gallon by keeping the engine in the powerband and dropping less RPMs.

We use a 6 speed 2017 F550 and a 10 speed 2020 F550 for hauling.

Can confirm, 8 to 9 mpg verse 9 to 10 mpg.

Also more torque off the start line with the 10 speed.

The guys take the 10 speed out if they are both sitting in the yard.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 6 speed and the 6.7.

Both of them pull 40,000 pounds gcwr down the road just fine.

If mpg is a big deal then get a 4 cylinder or electric car. 1-2 mpg improvement is insignificant and within the margin of error of measuring.

My 2016 averaged 18-19 on the freeway at 70-75 with light winds. My 2020 with the 10 speed was aways 20-21. Both F350 CC 4X4's with SRW axles. Pretty sure the 2016 had 3.55's and the 2020 definitely had 3.31's.

My 2017 gets 14.5 (hand calc 15). I drive 750 miles to work at 75 mph usually. It got 16 till about 60,000 miles then dropped off. My 7.3 increased 2 mpg at 60000 miles. I love the truck but for a diesel the mileage blows. I ask everyone I see with a 2020+ and they say 19-21 mpg.

I put 150,000 miles on a 2011, 100,000 on a 2015, 90,000 on a 2017 All 6.7L 3.55 SRW trucks

I currently have a 2020 configured the same and I get .5 to 1.0 mpg better when towing my 13,000 lbs GN Horse trailer and 1-2 mpg better empty hiway

Is your 2020 F550 getting 10mpg loaded or unloaded?
I am getting ~12 mpg highway unloaded (800lb flatbed) with my 2022 F550 7.3

It all depends on the price. 1-3 mpg saves me about $75 a month. (Using 2 mpg, 20k miles a year, and $5.89 diesel.) If the payment on an older trucks is less than $75 a month, then the older one wins as far as ownership.

I came from a 2015 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 with 3.31s Ecoboost to a 2021 F350 6.7 4x4 with 3.55s. I get better daily avg mileage, better towing, better hwy. I have never had a hwy trip under 20 mpg but I don’t drive faster than 75 mph often. I drive faster towing but still get better towing mpg.

But for the right price, I’m sure the older 6.7s will get good mileage. Just my 2 cents.

Average 14 city 16 highway maybe 17 on a good day down hill with a tail wind. 90k miles bone stock. 35" all terrain tires. Looking to delete soon or go with a Banks tuner.

With the heavy tow package gearing my 2020 6.7l will never get over 12. Might get 11 on a return trip.

The 2017 6 speed tranny doesn't ever hit over 10 that I am aware of.

We are only unloaded on the way back from job sites (we wouldn't run the truck unloaded).

The 2020 weighs 10,500 curb without anything on it, single cab with a 16' aluminum flat bed.

Might try the big gasser someday, but I wouldn't expect to get the life out of it that a diesel is able to give. I have heard good things about the 7.3.
