So long story short I have a 97 crew cab dually 7.3 with the e4od. The old transmission went out so I put a new one in it and it’s been working good except for my torque converter lockup. The transmission came with a new heavy duty torque converter too. I’ve got several thousand miles on the transmission so it’s been broken in but I’ve had problems. It was going into limp mode after I shut it off and started it back up on hot days and anyways I think it ended up being the tone ring and vss sensor but that’s another story. But my torque converter has always locked up at 30 mph on the dot no matter where I’m at in the throttle. If I lay into it the truck will hit third around 28 mph then immediately slam into lockup. It throws no codes and really isn’t unbearable to drive it’s just nowhere near as smooth as the other gears. Even under light throttle it jerks the truck a little bit. Is this normal for a heavy duty torque converter or is something else giving me problems
It is normal for a heavier duty torque converter. When you install a clutch (and that is what the lockup is, a clutch) with more capacity it is going to slam on.
Do you have the TS6 - 6 position switch? Or a tuner of another fashion? If you do unless custom tuned, it will change your trans pressure, causing it to lock early like that - I had that issue on mine until I pull the TS6 out, now depending on the tune on where it locks. It was dropping early 2nd gear, you'd just start building power and lose everything because TC locked, not a fun deal

it’s not tuned but ironically my neighbor has the same truck as mine but all original with low miles it looks like it came from the dealer new. He let me drive it and his lockup also hits at 30 like mine but it’s smooth you wouldn’t know it locked up unless you watched the tach. I’m just going to assume mines firm because it’s a heavy duty converter. I just don’t like how hard it slams when I’m heavy in the throttle it feels like a built transmission
Fairly sure that Mark above knows more about the transmission than I do - so I'm sure what he's saying is probably accurate considering his credentials his signature.
that was just my experience on mine, couldn't figure out what was going it was a nightmare to be pulling a trailer and lose all power because TC locked. It's good to know yours is locking in the right spot though, it should lock at a different spot when you're really in it or as far as I remember anyway.
I definitely understand how it can be bothersome when it locks hard - hopefully you can cope, replacing those isn't cheap
make sure with a ts 6 its not just their generic tunes it will need to be a custom tune to solve the lockup problem
so with the ts6 do I have to buy it with that tune already in or can I buy a blank one and tell a shop what I want? Or should I just take my truck to a shop and tell them what I want and let them buy the tuner
