I have an 18ft. 2 axle flat bed, 7K pound. uses 1/2 x20 studs and nuts, open end tapered pretty standard stuff. Every time I have a wheel off the nuts come off hard like threads are beat up. The studs seem fine but the nuts I have to run my thread chaser thru so I can thread them on by hand, the tapered end seems squeezed . They don't protrude thru the wheel so I don't think they are bottoming out. I've replaced a number of the nuts but makes no difference. The wheels are white spoke steel and are not hub centric if that makes any difference. This has me stumped, are trailer lug nuts a different taper than the standard nuts I'm getting at the auto parts store? The originals did it also. Thanks for any ideas, Jim
The stickers are long gone but I believe they called for 110 and that's what I've been using. Thats high for everyday bolts but I guess now that you've got me wondering I'll have to search for lug nut tourqe.
A quick look for 15" steel wheels gets 90-120 on 1/2" studs. I agree with deformed thought, I found a couple of hard chrome nut in my misc. stuff I'm going to try.
1/2-20 wheel studs? I have found that in use, aftermarket chrome or even just replacement nuts will often act deformed at removal where as OEM Ford nuts either chrome, SS capped, or just the plain old open ended ones come off and go on about the same every time.
I think the OEM nuts are better steel.
I never throw OEM away.
Aftermarket replacement studs seem to do OK though.
I'm not far from the factory that built it so I ran it up there to see what they think ( long out of warranty) and they were pretty interested in the whole thing but really didn't know what to say. I told them I have ordered new Grizzly harder and chrome nuts to try and they seemed to think that was a good idea. They didn't think the wheels were an issue which I'm on the fence about, the hole for the stud where the lug nuts ride is more of a stair step than taper. Seems like that is "crimping" the lug nut around the stud. I only have one other wheel the same to compare to as a spare on a boat trailer and the holes on it are much more of a smooth taper. It's taking all the resolve I have to not take a 60 degree ream to these holes, take a few thousands off to try and smooth the taper. But I will wait and see what the new lug nuts do, they should be here Tues.
For any body that cares I have the new "harder" lug nuts on and seems to be fixed! Holding back on calling a victory till I haul a load, road trip into Ontario in a month then I'll be convinced.
