Customer installed trailer camera

I just got my 2022 F450 with the Ultimate Trailer Tow system and will soon (though not soon enough) be mounting a cabover camper on the truck. When I do, I'll have to remove the tailgate which will remove the rear camera. I plan to buy two cameras. One for the camper, and one for my trailer, and have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.
  1. Is there a way to connect the camera I mount on the trailer to the connector for the tailgate? This would allow me use the camera system with the trailer as I currently do with the tailgate installed and use the aux camera connector for the trailer.
  2. Will this work with the trailer backup assist?

Interesting question.. you would hope ford figured a truck camper into the camera system.. I bet when you take the tailgate off there are several plugs to unplug as well.. bet one is the camera and when you plug in new camera for the camper it "should" work like a charm.

now if there was a way to keep the back up cam on or turn it on an off the see behind you.. that would be the deal..

Yes. There are several wires to unplug and Ford kindly included plug/caps for both the truck side and tailgate side of each cable. I guess what I'm looking for is an adapter to connect the "trailer" camera to connector that goes to the tailgate camera.
If there's no way to do it, I'll end up using the "trailer" camera for the camper and getting a wireless camera for my trailers. Maybe I'll just suction cup one of my GoPros to the back of the trailer.

If you have the 360 degree camera, the tailgate camera uses a Fakra coax plug. Rostra makes a camera relocation kit for this application, but it's pricey. You could use this camera on your camper, it will come on in reverse but you can't activate the tailgate camera while in motion down the road.

The trailer camera plugs into the 12 pin connector and can be used while in motion on 21 and later models, but does not come on automatically while in reverse.

On the 2022's, at least on mine, you can use the tailgate while in motion if you have the 360 camera package.

That would be nice. On my 21, I can only use the bed and trailer cameras in motion.

My 2022 F350 with Ultimate Trailer Tow 360 camera package also lets you view the bed camera, the tailgate camera or the hitch view camera in motion on the highway.

Are these 3 separate cameras or three different views from 2 cameras?

This may be what mr176 is referring to. But you might try making your own experimental pigtail that goes between the trucks connector and the tail gate connector. If the camera still functions normally, then I'd think you have a good chance of making a longer pigtail cable for your trailer and get yourself either in OEM or aftermarket tail gate camera to mount on the back of your trailer.

NAV-TV makes and sells a aftermarket module the gives full access to all cameras while while in motion and it has I think it has inputs for 3 aux cameras. You would have to check their website to see if will work with the 2022 sync 4 platform. On my 2020 Platinum, I did get the UTP and the Pro back up options. I did not buy the OEM Customer Installed Rear Trailer Back Up Camera. So I think that add on item uses the 12 pin plug in the left rear corn of the truck bed and this where the AUX camera input is picked up from.

The,bed view is from the high mounted bed light/brake light camera on cab. Not sure but would bet rear view and hitch view are both in tailgate camera. You pick your view from the Sync 4 screen menu.
