2011 F550, 6.7. Had the thermostat replaced recently because truck wouldn't get to temp. Soon after that, primary radiator decided to let go. Replaced that, now it will hold temp, but will intermittently overheat. Recovery tank fills up and return hose is rock hard. Shut it down and let it cool and it will run fine for hours, then all of a sudden, overheat. Initially I was thinking air pocket, but I've run it for at least 20 hot/cold cycles. Any help is greatly appreciated.
No codes. I did notice today that the cooling fan is spinning but doesn't seem to be spinning at the speed of the engine. I turned on the max AC which should send a signal to the clutch on the fan to fully engage but it doesn't change speed. I'm thinking it could be the clutch fan, but if I'm cruising down the highway, I would think that the airflow coming in thru the radiator would be more than the fan can pull through? Temp Guage will peg out and message on center dash shows a wrench and "high heat" condition.
sounds to me like you have an issue with the clutch fan. There are several speeds it can turn at.
But when it comes on high, there is no mistake.
Upon first start up, does it come on high then?
Upon first startup, no it doesn't spin up fast. Also, if you turn on MAX AC, it should send a signal to the clutch fan to turn on full blast as well and it doesn't do that either. So the more I think about it and talk with you guys, it almost sounds like that is the culprit. I'm going to run some tests on the clutch and make sure it's getting power first.
