The 10.25 is very much like an 8.8 in that 9 times out of 10 if you reuse the shims that your axle came with in the exact positions they were in from the factory the new gear mesh pattern comes out perfect as long as the both old and new gears are factory Ford sets and not something aftermarket. At least that's been my experience with these axles.
My mantra has always been DIY on all my projects, assuming I am comfortable with the task. Several years ago, I attempted to set up a new ring and pinion and after purchasing the tools, and removing the diff from the vehicle several times (labor intensive), I decided it was time to concede and let a professional do it. I’ve not given up though, if I find myself in a similar situation with my 54, I will of course try the DIY approach again. I thin my biggest mistake is that I should have taken more photos and pay close attention to shim location during disassembly. Good luck and have fun.
