Thought I could make it to retirement but slow leak in left front tire. Originals were continentals, next were BFG and next were BFG. Now new BFG. All same size, but strange as any of them got older the interior noise level becomes unbearably high. New tires and almost silent interior. Ford/Mercury/Mazda didn't waste any money on sound deadener. Thought all my wheel bearings were shot. 150K.
2005 Mariner AWD. After a week, I'm loving the quiet again. Hard to believe it was anything to do with being the full time 4WD since I rotated the tires regularly. Never had a vehicle that the tires made such a sound difference. The old tires still had acceptable tread, 6/32?
6 years old. I didn't realize how loud they were until had the Wife with me one day. You couldn't have normal conversation. Same trip in our 23-year-old Taurus with 10 year old tires is still silent.
Any tire older than about 6-7 years should be replaced regardless of tread remaining. As the rubber hardens it changes the way the the tire flexes and can lead to a catastrophic failure.
I experienced it once in my motorhome when the left rear inner dual tread released from the tire (not a re-capped tire either) and wrapped itself around the axle after demolishing the floor under the closet where all the 110V wiring is. Tire was 7 years old and I replaced all of them after some major unplanned repairs.
As Scott91370 pointed out, rubber hardens and harder rubber tires are louder. That's why new ones are quieter.
