i have a 2003 f-150 fx4 supercab flair side, and i have the standard goodyear atx wranglers which probably have a year or better of tread left...
today at ford lot i noticed the new fx4's have pirelli tires, scorpions i think it was....anyone heard if these are good tires etc?
like my wranglers but they seem to leak air more than most tires...heard they are a bee atch to balance also..
well thanks for any info...thanks
The reason I heard makes them so hard to balance is because the tires are very heavy. Seemingly in my opinion if it's the right size and application any tire is designed to be a good tire if properly rotated, inflated, and aligned. More of a preference if you ask me but some have been proven better or "more popular" than others such as the BFG's A/T TKO's. I had these tires before I got my Goodyear Wranglers with Silentarmor and they're a high quality and strong tire, the BFG's are the best out there that I could tell but they are pricey which the pirellis will be too.
thanks papa for responding....the pirellies (sp)
dont look as beefy if u know what i mean as the wranglers....yea i heard bfg were good tires, will look at them......
I am currently running 255/70/16 Wrangler Silent Armor and they balance great. I balance them myself where I work and they do take a bit of weight (less that 2oz a side) But they're better than a lot of trucks I've worked on. Again, to each their own. Pirellies (sp) are a fashion statement. They simply don't have a lot of truck tires. Their niche is hi end performance. FloRida in "Right Round" talks about his "pirellis on roll" in reference to his benz. It's like having a Gouchi bag kinda thing.
When it comes to tires, I am a firm believer in 'you get what you Pay for' My f-150 has 35's on it so my gas mileage is gone but on my Camry I changed from the cheapest tires to the best and went from 27 MPG to 34 MPG. The only thing I did was install a good set of Michelins.
I drove a few of the New Fords that had the pirelli tires and the road noise drove me nuts, I agree with dblake37 when it comes to tires you get what you pay for..
all depends on what kind of driving you do? I had Goodyear MTR's on my 6x6 and have BFG Mud terrains on my Jeep and Continentals contitrac on the wifes Freestyle, not sure what I have on the other Jeep and the escort (kids cars) but I'm sure i'll find out as soon as they need tires. lol
but a really good tire to look at is the Goodyear tripple treads......
I had an 07 f150 with the pirelli tires and thought that they were just fine. I am thingking of putting them on my mom's explorer. They wore well 36,000 miles & 50% tread left. The only complaint i had was when the truck sat over night they flat spotted, but after a mile they were fine. I did add a little more air and helped that out quite a bit.
I work with tires everyday, and have seen plenty of good and bad orginal tires, as well as replacement tires.
The Pirelli Scorpions that are on the 04+ with 20" wheels are a decent tire. I havent seen too many tires go bad from broken belts, tread separation, etc. The main problem with these tires it seems is that they tend to develop flat spots after sitting for a little bit. The flat spotting usually disappears after a few miles driven though.
The worst tire I have ever delt with are the Hankook Dynapro AS. Although I havent seen too many problems with Hankooks other tires, the Dynapros are garbage. I have replaced at least 50 Dynapros for bubbles in the tread/sidewall. This is for both the Passenger rated and the Load Range E tires. Plus, the Passenger rated tires are one of the worst tires to dismount due to the extremely flimsy sidewall, it is very difficult to break the bead.
The Goodyear Wrangler A/T are decent tires. Most of my experience with them are from the Superdutys with 20" wheels. It seems that some times you will get a set that will balance great. Then, there will be other times that they balance and Road Force horribly.
Another brand of tire that I would sway away from is Contental/General tires. These are alot of times used from the factory, probably because they can be bought cheaply. Generals cheaper tires seem..... cheap, lol; but there more expensive tires are pretty decent.
Firestones and Bridgestone make some pretty decent tires. Firestone has a tire called a Firestone Transforce A/T and H/T which are pretty good tires. Also, Bridgestone has there line of Duelers in many different styles.
Also Nittos line of Grapplers are pretty nice tires.
If you want to know about a certain tire, post it here, either I or maybe someone else will have some experience with them.
I have mounted a few sets of Kuhmo Road Venture AT KL78. I havent heard any complaints or noticed any problems with them. They seem like a pretty afforable all terrain tire.
I had Pirelli Truck tires (8 ply) on My last truck. They wore like iron, but if I got in snow they had no grip. They rode with 70 pounds air pressure. I put 50,000 miles on them and they still looked good when I sold the truck.
