Sorry couldn’t search threads on my phone. Checked oil on V10 2003X 114K miles after 4k mile change. Not a drop on dipstick. Took 3 quarts and still not sure if it was at the top. After 400 miles now a qt low? Any ideas-preferably not ugly rebuild ones
BTW about Once or twice between oil changes I get code for large vacuum leak However couldn’t find one with smoke but could have missed
Does it leak oil externally? If not, the first thing to replace would be the valve seals (sometimes referred to as umbrella seals) as that would be really the only " not ugly rebuild" option.
The bad news is they're under the valve springs, so the valve springs have to come off to get at them. It can be done in vehicle, they make special tools to remove valve springs with the heads still installed and a dummy spark plug that screws into the spark plug hole that you attach compressed air to to keep the valves from failing into the cylinder when you remove the spring locks & retainers.
Here's and example of the tool for putting air pressure in the cylinder to hold the valves shut. Don't know if this exact kit will work because I don't know the thread size of the V10 spark plug (my excursion is of the diesel variety) .
Check your pcv valve/hose. A bad pcv or vacuum leak can cause these engines to suck excessive oil through the pcv system . Easy to check and replace. Also when you have the valve out look down to make sure the baffle is still there.

Darn Anton every time I try to do a reply it tells me to add 10 characters- no matter how long my reply is. Anyway if that indeed turns out to be the cause, do you k ow a ballpark figure a repair shop might charge. Not something I want to tackle. I currently live in an Apartment and the garage is small. Have to put the hooks into the sheet rock just to fit it in
sorry dropped the m on you name
Basically when you pull the pcv out, look down the hole. If you see camshafts or rockers your baffle is gone. I would not recommend using a screwdriver to probe it, I broke my baffle off doing that...

No idea, probably over $1k because its time intensive.

What is the exact code? I just recently got a P0721 code on my 1997 F150 XLT 4.6L v8 and it turned out the engine needed a "Fuel Vapor Separator Tube Assembly" (Dorman part # 46076). When I looked at the hoses under the hood I could see where the break was in the old hose near the green fitting. My tube assembly went from the back of the throttle body to the vapor canister purge solenoid mounted on the drivers side firewall beside the brake booster.
The code is :
P0455 Evap system leak detected - large leak
I bought a smoke machine but could not find one. However that was my first time doing it so who knows. I get the gas cap loose light sometimes. It is on its 3rd gas cap-in this day in time it is a pricey(for a gas cap) locking one
First did you do the oil change? Are you sure that it was in range after the oil change? I would not assume it was up to range if you didnt check it yourself. So there could be nothing wrong in the first place. I would fill and monitor if this is the case.
Also check torque of oil drain plug and oil filter. See if you are leaking there. It wouldnt be the first time for a loose drain plug or loose/bad oil filter gasket.
yeah oil level after change(I did not do)-passed through my mind. I had it changed yesterday and I watched them put in 6 qts of Mobil 1 5W20 . Checked oil level this am after sitting overnight-level was at the dot at the top of the hash. I'll watch it this week. When I went yesterday-it was a quart low so I added 3 qts the night before to come up to being only 1 qt low. That scared the ^%#^& out of me. Honestly-there is not a drop of oil showing anywhere on any surface of the engine...so either it gobbled up a quart every thousand miles with some internal issue or it was not there to begin with.
