I am close to starting up a rebuilt 239 flathead. Engine is stock, apart for dual carb setup. I know these were in the day of leaded fuel Can anyone tell me what fuel to use, or what additives i need to add....
Just use regular fuel. Of you are concerned about the effects of ethanol you may want to use an additive. But many say it's not needed. I do not add anything to my 54 Yblock gas.
As far as lead, experts say you don't need lead unless you're pulling heavy loads everyday or are racing. I did put different heads on my 54 with hardened seats. I'm not an expert on flatheads but I remember reading that some years of flatheads had hardened seats.
I would fill up with ethanol free gas before you store the truck for the winter or at least put in a good stabilizer .
A '51 would not have come from the factory with hardened seats, instead it would have RotaMatic valve assemblies that spin the valves to even out wear. Not as good as hardened seats, but good enough for most use. I'd say to use non-ethanol gas if you can, but at today's prices.... Yikes!
Ok thanks everyone. Ethanol free it is. Have to take a second mortgage out if I plan on driving it a lot. Our only ethanol free up here in canad is the 94 octane At chevron.
