This is a truck that doesn’t get driven every day. Some around town and then once or twice a month it goes on a 200 mile round trip. About a year or so ago it started using a ton of oil. Like a gallon when we did the 200 mile trip. It has some small leaks but not a gallon kind f leak. The likely culprit in my mind was injector o-rings. I pulled the fuel filter but it looked fine. No black color. I was on the fence about paying to have the o-rings changed or just go for a complete overhaul since it was getting up in miles. I kept driving the truck normally and kept adding oil. I think I went through 8-10 gallons. This was over the course of the year FYI.
Then one day for no particular reason it just stopped using oil. Like almost none. Right back to normal and like it never happened. I have done three 200 mile trips and I doubt it’s used a quart.
Although I’m happy about the consumption I’m a little uneasy about what was causing it and whether or not it will come back with a vengeance. Any guesses?
my excursion did something similar, about 5 years back we were getting ready to drive to Tucson to see our daughter, I check the oil and it isn't touching the dip stick. drive it up to the garage and add 2.5 gallons of oil, no leaks anywhere. needing to get going I put 12 gallons of oil in the back and we left, stopped in Phoenix and checked the oil and it was full, checked again in Tucson and was full. to this day it has never had any oil added between oil changes.
It is possible that the oil filter was not tightened down enough, and at speed on the highway the higher oil pressure generated by constant 1500+ rpm caused it to leak significantly worse when underway. Once you get home and revvs are down less than 1000, it may have stopped leaking as badly, and now you have lost a ton of oil and don't know why. It seems to be the only thing that would explain the problem suddenly solving itself.
