I have a 99 E350 Van with the 7.3 Power Stroke; and long after I bought it, I learned that I wasn't getting the same HP and torque as the same engine and trans get when built into a Super Duty or Excursion.
When I heard that the 6.0L Power Stroke was coming to the E350 for 2004, I thought this problem would disappear, but it hasn't. The same trans and engine that get 560 pounds of torque in a Super Duty or Excursion will only deliver 440 in the full size van. Likewise the HP is something like 235 instead of 325.
Why does van get less? Is it a regulatory problem, a vehicle weakness? Can I reprogram the chip, or I do I risk breaking something? I've asked dealers, mechanics, and Ford. No answer. In fact, nobody even seems aware of the issue.
I'm considering buying either a new E350 or Excursion, and this is my big issue. For personal reasons, I'd prefer the van; but I tow a large trailer, and I want the power that I am paying to own.
Does that mean it has no intercooler or the intercooler is located differently??? (By the way, you're the first person in the universe to have a clue on this question!) Thanks.
Has anyone seen or heard of an intercooler kit for the E series? I also share sentiment with my E350. Would the addition of an intercooler automatically bump power?
FYI, to compensate, Ford did put in a larger turbo in the vans--still does not make up for over 100 lbs.ft. of torque.
If the intercooler won't increase horsepower, then why do virtually all turbo'd vehicles use them? I understand what an intercooler does...it increases the density of the charge by lowering the temperature of the intake side air, which allows for better combustion. So while I understand the PCM, it seems to me that a simple addition of an intercooler would still give any engine more power.
white box 350, I think what he's saying is that simply adding the intercooler won't boost HP much. The reason the van has the lower power numbers has to do with programming. The engines that use an intercooler are programmed at higher numbers.
