Trailer lights only work when in reverse

Trailer lights only work when in reverse
Using my grandfather's 2013 f150 to tow a boat and noticed none of the lights worked on the trailer. When I backed the boat into the water I noticed the worked. After testing all blinkers and brake lights worked when the truck was in reverse, but not in drive, neutral or park. Anyone see this before? Tia
