Top Loader Conversion

Converting to a toploader, started a previous thread asking about a speedo cable. I realized I am going to have multiple questions so I’ll just start a thread on the conversion.

so first question is what u joint do these f100s have in them. Mine is a 3speed manual longbed. I’m currently not at home (college) so I would measure myself but that won’t happen. I think it’s a 1310 size but I’m not certain.

im matching a u joint to my driveshaft then going to source a slip yoke after I have a u joint ordered.

Not sure about the U joint question, but my 65 has a 4 speed toploader in it. Front end is up on jack stands right now so let me know if you want photos/info on anything under there.

Yes by all means send pictures!! Please I would love to see a toploader in one of these there aren’t many photos available that I can find.

BTW the toploader out of a car is what I am referring too, not the np435 with granny low as many people get confused with because technically they are both toploaders

Will grab some photos next time I'm under there, probably Monday since tomorrow is for mom... I only have the case stamping and haven't opened it up yet (winter project) so I don't know specifically which tranny this is, but there's no granny gear and it's definitely a car toploader. Case stamping is C5AR-7006-D W2, which is a '65 case design used from 65-67. My truck has a 406FE out of a '62 Galaxie, along with a 9" rear correct for the same Galaxie (and presumably sourced from the same car, though now it's just the axle/housing as I put in a rebuilt center section last week). Toploader sits between 'em.

If you can find the tag on the Top Loader you can tell what it was in.

Yeah I know, mine has no tag, just the case stamping.

Top loader?

If the top loader you are going to use is the close ratio 2.32 first gear you will be greatly disappointed. Your 3 speed has a much lower first gear. Your truck will be a real dog. Believe me I made that mistake years ago. I was able to get a wide ratio top loader from a Mustang with the 2.78 first gear ratio that worked perfect. If you end up with a wide ratio top loader you will need a longer speedometer cable with the plastic gear from the same transmission which has a reversed pattern because it comes in from the passenger side. The wide ratio transmission will have a 28 spline out put which you may already have so the slip yoke will fit and of course you will need another drive shaft made up.

Yes it’s a wide ratio. Yes I need a new speedo gear/longer cable hence the mentioning in the first post relating to the other thread I created.
yes I know I need a slip yoke to fit the output and that wide ratios and most toploaders are 28spline.

Now does anyone know what the u joint size in these trucks is? 1310 caps will work? I’m not home (Military Academy) so I cannot measure.

I recently replaced the joints in my 66 f100 240 3spd. They were all 1310s...

I figured they are 1310 sizes. The output shaft I have for the top loader is 1330, so I’ll get a 1310-1330 conversion joint

Pickup

Since I’m still currently out of state for the next month, I had a family member pick up the transmission. Got the speedo cable and u joints figured out as well.

Also ordered a hurst bench seat shifter primarily for the 55 Chevy cars with bench’s, yet I still think I will have to move the shift mechanism forward. Anyone that has done this conversation if you would chime in and let me know if you had to move your shifter up?

As you can see the radius needs to be reduced to clear the bench seat.
I bought the same shifter and it won’t work with my bench seat. The angle that the shifter comes back needs to be reduced. I haven’t found a shop that is willing to try to bend it yet.
I have the 4 speed top loader.
The thin rod is the angle it needs to be to clear the seat.

I considered the tower-shift conversion like some Jeeps used. David Kee used to sell it, but I think now you'd have to scrounge for the parts.

can you not just heat and bend in a vice?

If I had a good vice and some metal working tools I would.
The shops I've talked to are too timid to try.
Here is the pic of the interior WITH A DIFFERENT shifter. The shifter pictured is in N. The Hurst bench seat shifter has too much angle to be able shift into 2nd or 4th. Look at the angle compared to the leading edge of the seat. Remember, the shifter in this pic is not the bench shifter. It's the only pic I have to illustrate the seat/shifter position. Does this help explain the issue?
