Anyone who has but a 4 barrel and intake and cam in there 351m how would I go about doing that thier is a kit online that comes with edelbrock
600cfm 4bbl carb and 4 barrel intake and a cam but I don’t know if the cam is very big it say it’s duration is 292. I’m putting true dual glass packs on and wondering if this kit is right Edelbrock carb kit
I'm using that same carburetor and intake and my cam is a Crane cam with the exact same specifications, I have no valve rotators, stock valve springs, 106,xxx miles on truck, but more like 60,xxx on the cam, a Holley fuel pressure regulator set at 5.5psi, and my distributor has a quick advance kit in it and timing is set at a total 35 degrees btc at about 2,000 rpm with vacuum hose plugged, all mechanical timing. My carb is only maybe 10 years old, but the cam and intake have been in/on it since the later 1980s. I have dual exhaust, 2-1/4" pipes, turbo mufflers. 1977 F-150, 351M, C-6, 3.50 gearing, 31" tires. I'm pleased.
I plumb forgot, just before I did the cam, I did do a straight up timing set while doing a water pump. It alone was noticeable. I also do run oil with the zinc. Either Kendall GT-1 (I still have some 20w50 stored from use in a old bike I had) or Delo LE 15w40
That kit is a good start. Definitely replace the timing chain for a double roller type that you should install straight up. I did the same to the 351M I had in my 79 4x4....HUGE difference in power. I had dudes asking me if it was a 390. Was also running glass packs and 31in tires. Was still a beast when I put 33s on it a couple years later. Make sure when your breaking in the new cam that your oil has plenty of zinc....I won't go into that here. There are lots of threads about it and many opinions. There is an additive you can buy off the shelf...can't remember the name of it. The cam I used was Comp Cam 268.
Ditto on the timing set as others mentioned. You didn’t say what gearing, tire size, etc your running but remember that the 351m is around 8 to 1 compression in stock form. So you don’t want a high duration cam without compression to support it. A popular choice with a 600cfm carb and performer type intake is the comp xe256h cam or similar for good street torque/smooth idle in a truck. Or If you can sacrifice some bottom end for the sake of a bit more rumble and have the gears to run a bit more rpm the xe262h would work, though I would install it advanced 4 degrees to pick up a bit more cylinder pressure.
These comp xe cams “crutch” low compression engines by building better cylinder pressure through aggressive lobes/timing events. Personally I would not run the Edelbrock cam due to having the opposite affect to what I mentioned about the XE series.
“ You didn’t say what gearing, tire size, etc your running but remember that the 351m is around 8 to 1 compression in stock form.”
I’m running 4.10 gears np435 4 spd manual dana 60 rear and Dana 44 front 4 inch rough lift and 33-35 inch tires haven’t decided might bore out the 351 and turn it into to a stroker for better compression like you mentioned earlier but I do want a little rumble at idle.
Your 351M has the same bore as a 400, you only need a 400 crank and pistons to make it a 400. Pistons are needed as you use the same connecting rods, but with the extra half inch stroke, the wrist pin has to be higher up in the piston so that the pistons don't try to knock the heads off.
