Engine mounts flathead

As I was replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets, I found that there is almost zero clearance between the manifold and the steering box. I’ve had and used the truck, 1951 F1 with a flathead V8, for close to 20 years. I figured the mounts might be bad but find no slop in the bushings. Is this normal and I never noticed or is something not right and if so do you think engine mounts and trans mount would fix it?

The mounts typically get squished down, not sloppy. Got a picture of them? Should be almost an inch of clearance. Also a pic at the box would help.

I added photos of both front mounts, the trans mount and the steering box to manifold. All mounts seem to have the correct space as far as I know.

Your front mounts should be tightened until the bolts bottom, it doesn't look like they are tight. You might loosen them and confirm they are centered in their cups then tighten. Not sure if that will help, there is a lot of clearance "missing".

Is it possible he has incorrect manifold(s)? Would car manifolds or different year/model have a different shape and cause clearance issues?

52 merc, you may be on to something. I’ve had the truck for close to 20 years but have never worked on the driver side manifold. Could be it’s had little clearance the whole time. Does anyone have a photo of a “correct” manifold on an F1? I doubt I could find one but it would help to know what to look for.

I had that thought, but I don't think Car manifolds are that different in that area, mostly in the outlets at the front. Barry, if you can see the casting numbers on the manifold, it should be 7RT-9431 for the truck manifold.

I can’t really read the casting numbers but they don’t look close to those. I can’t seem to find any source for manifolds.

Could you take a picture of the whole exhaust manifold on that side? From the number of characters, I'm wondering if it is an EABxxxxx, which would be a '53 truck or a Car manifold.

You might contact "jmadsen" on here about a manifold, he has a pretty good stash of engines.

I took a couple pictures of mine showing the manifold and the clearance. It's close, close enough I can't put my finger between the manifold and the steering box, but there is some room. Hard to see in the pics, but you can at least see if yours is the same shape. Mine is the correct 7RT truck manifold.

Someone put that on to create duals, I imagine. I sent Jmadsen an email with a link to this thread.

If you can find the correct manifold, I would think it would be beneficial. While it may never be a problem, whenever we talk about exhaust and steering boxes in this context, I'm always mindful of this story, and the problems exhaust too close to steering components can cause.
